Teenagers going to bed late and struggling to wake early is a biological shift rather than a lifestyle choice. The timing of the internal clock changes during puberty, and school timetables do not.

The internal clock moves later during puberty

The circadian system sets the timing of sleepiness and alertness, and in adolescence that timing shifts back by a matter of hours relative to childhood.

Part of the mechanism is a delay in the evening rise of melatonin, the hormone associated with sleep onset. The signal to feel sleepy simply arrives later.

The shift appears across very different cultures and school systems, which is one of the reasons it is understood as developmental rather than social.

Sleep need does not fall to match

Adolescents require roughly as much sleep as younger children, and considerably more than adults. The requirement stays high while the available window moves later.

If the clock shifts back and the alarm does not, the difference comes directly out of total sleep. The deficit accumulates across the school week.

This is why a teenager can appear alert late in the evening and unrousable in the morning. Both observations reflect the same shifted schedule.

Early starts land in the biological night

Waking a teenager at six may occur during the phase their body treats as the middle of the night. Alertness in the following hours is correspondingly poor.

The first lessons of the day therefore fall at the point of lowest cognitive performance for that age group. This is the basis for the recurring debate about later school start times.

Where start times have been moved later, the reported effects include longer total sleep and improved attendance, though implementation is complicated by transport and childcare.

Weekend catch-up creates its own problem

Sleeping until midday at the weekend recovers some of the deficit but also pushes the clock further back, because light exposure in the morning is what holds it in place.

Monday then arrives with the clock later than it was on Friday, which is why the start of the school week is consistently the worst point.

Keeping wake times within a narrower range across the week limits the drift, at the cost of some recovery. Neither option removes the underlying mismatch.

Light and screens act on the same system

Light in the evening delays the clock further, and bright light in the morning advances it. Screens matter mainly through this pathway rather than through content.

Morning light exposure is the lever most often overlooked, and it works in the direction families want. Getting outside early has a stronger effect than most evening restrictions.

Persistent inability to sleep, extreme daytime sleepiness or sleep problems accompanied by low mood are worth raising with a health professional rather than attributing entirely to adolescence.
