The same total study time produces very different results depending on how it is distributed. Splitting it across several sessions outperforms one long block, and the reason is that forgetting does useful work.

Retrieval strengthens memory more than rereading

Bringing something back from memory changes the memory. The act of retrieving a fact makes it easier to retrieve again later, in a way that simply looking at it does not.

Rereading a page produces a strong sense of familiarity, which children and adults both mistake for knowing. Familiarity fades quickly because nothing was reconstructed, only recognised.

This is why testing yourself feels harder than reviewing notes and works better. Difficulty during practice is not a sign that the method is failing.

Partial forgetting is the mechanism, not the obstacle

If a second session follows immediately, the material is still sitting in mind and retrieval costs nothing. Nothing is strengthened because nothing had to be rebuilt.

Leave a gap and some of it slips. Recovering the partly faded memory demands more effort, and that effort is what deepens the trace for the next time.

The gap has to be long enough to allow slippage but short enough that recovery is still possible. Too long and the child is relearning from scratch rather than retrieving.

Massed practice creates a fluency that does not last

An hour spent on one topic in one sitting produces visible improvement inside that hour. Performance climbs, the child feels competent, and the parent sees the session working.

That climb largely reflects short-term availability. Tested a week later, the block-studied material is recalled markedly less well than material covered in shorter separated sessions.

Cramming therefore succeeds at its narrow aim and fails at the wider one. It can carry a child through a test the next morning while leaving little behind by the following term.

Why almost nobody chooses the better method

Learners judge how well they are learning by how easy the session feels. Spaced practice feels worse throughout, because every session begins with the discomfort of half-forgetting.

The evidence of its advantage only arrives later, at a point where the connection to the study method is no longer obvious. The feedback loop runs the wrong way.

Children left to organise their own revision reliably choose the method that feels most productive. Structure has to come from outside, because the internal signal is misleading.

What this looks like across a school week

Spacing does not require more time, only different placement. Three short sessions across a week replace one long one, with the total unchanged and the timetable no busier.

Revisiting older topics briefly alongside current ones costs a few minutes and keeps earlier material accessible. Most school revision skips this and treats each topic as finished when the unit ends.

The gains show up in cumulative subjects most, where later work depends on earlier work. Mathematics and languages punish forgotten foundations in a way that standalone topics do not.
