Fibre is defined by not being digested
Fibre is plant carbohydrate that human enzymes cannot break down. It reaches the large intestine largely intact, which is the point rather than a shortcoming.
Soluble types dissolve and form a gel, slowing the movement of contents and the absorption of sugars. Insoluble types add bulk and speed transit instead.

Processing removes it without changing appearance
Refining grain removes the bran and germ, taking most of the fibre with them. The resulting flour looks and tastes better to most children and behaves quite differently.
Juicing removes fibre while retaining sugars, which is why juice and whole fruit have different effects despite similar origins.
Because the loss is invisible, a diet can appear varied and still be low in fibre. Nothing about the plate signals the difference.
The effects show up in transit and fullness
Bulk and water retention in the stool make it easier to pass. Low fibre intake is one of the common contributors to constipation in childhood.
Constipation in children can become self-reinforcing, since a painful experience leads to withholding, which worsens the underlying problem. Fibre is one factor among several.
Fibre also slows gastric emptying and increases the sense of fullness, so higher-fibre meals sustain children longer between eating occasions.
Gut bacteria depend on what reaches them
Bacteria in the large intestine ferment certain fibres, producing short-chain fatty acids that nourish the cells lining the colon.
The composition of gut bacteria responds to what they are fed, so dietary fibre influences which populations thrive. This develops through childhood alongside diet.
Claims about specific health outcomes from altering gut bacteria run well ahead of what is established. The mechanism is real; the marketing built on it frequently is not.
Increases have to be gradual
A sudden large increase in fibre commonly causes bloating and discomfort, because fermentation increases before the bacterial population has adjusted.
Fibre also requires fluid to work as intended. Increasing intake without adequate drinking can make stools harder rather than easier.
Persistent constipation, pain, blood, or any change in a child's bowel pattern that does not settle should be assessed by a doctor rather than managed by dietary change alone.
