The other half

Decoding produces the word. Understanding it requires language comprehension.

Which is why the widely used model describes reading as the product of decoding and language comprehension — if either is zero, reading comprehension is zero.

A child who decodes fluently and lacks vocabulary and background knowledge cannot comprehend.

This is why comprehension difficulties frequently appear later, when texts become more demanding, in children whose early decoding was fine.

Fluency

What parents can do

Talking, extensively, from birth, since vocabulary develops through exposure.

Reading aloud regularly, including books above the child's own reading level.

Supporting practice without making it aversive, since enjoyment predicts continued reading.

And access to books, which is associated with outcomes independently of other factors.

Difficulties

A proportion of children have persistent difficulty despite good teaching.

Multilingual children

Learning to read in more than one language is achievable and follows the same principles.
